Description
An AP English Literature and Composition course engages students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature.
 
The course includes intensive study of representative works from various genres and periods, concentrating on works of recognized literary merit by a variety of authors.
 
Reading in an AP course is both wide and deep. In this course, they read deliberately and thoroughly, taking time to understand a work's complexity, to absorb its richness of meaning, and to analyze how that meaning is embodied in literary form.
 
Writing in an integral part of the AP English Literature and Composition course and exam. Writing assignments focus on the critical analysis of literature and include expository, analytical and argumentative essays.
 
All assignments are due on the given date. Essays and longer projects will be assigned at least one week in advance. 
 
GRADING POLICY:
The following policies have been adopted by the SMAHS English Department, effective August 2014. These policies are designed to increase student accountability for academic success, requiring students to learn to meet deadlines and complete assignments in appropriate time frames, eventually preparing graduating seniors for the demands of college coursework or career responsibilities.
 
*Please note that all school policies for make-up work following legal absences (as outlined in the Student Handbook) and IEP accommodations will be followed.
 
Daily Homework Policy - Late assignments will not be accepted for credit.
 
Major Curriculum Requirements (such as research papers mandated by school board or state): Work submitted late will be subjected to a 20% penalty per day, and will not be accepted for a grade beyond one week after due date.

Epic Poetry Exam - study your notes and know all relevant information from "The Ecclesiastical History of the English People" (Venerable Bede), "Caedmon's Hymn" (Caedmon), "Beowulf" (unknown), and "The Iliad" (Homer). Be sure to also know the four characteristics of epic poetry.

After reading the given short story, write a 1-2 page essay in which you analyze how the beginning of the story prepares the reader for the end of the story. Remember to avoid plot summary. Use plot details only to support your thesis. Direct quotes are required as forms of support.
